Faith No More - Sol Invictus

Faith No More - Sol Invictus
(Reclamation! Recordings, Ipecac Recordings, 2015)

Matador è per me l’apice.
And that’s all folks! ;)

Faith No More - Sol Invictus
(Reclamation! Recordings, Ipecac Recordings, 2015)

I had been waiting for this album without surrendering to the temptation to listen to it before its official release.
I had been waiting for this album with a mixture of anxiety and superstition, because I do not trust in reunions and I was almost scared of the idea of a reunion of one of my favourite artist with his most famous band.
But the first listening immediately scattered all the shadows, dispelling every doubt.
I had been waiting several months before deciding to write something about this album: I did not want to take the risk to be prey to easy enthusiasm and I did want to really understand how much I like it as I continued to listen to it through time. I did not want to seem an inveterate fan (and I really hope to succeed in this aim, now!).
Two days ago, as I was driving back home saying goodbye to Casentino, as sun was setting covering all mountains and hills with its orange bright light and I was listening to Sol Invictus, I finally realized what I could have written about the latest work of Patton and co.
The title is ambitious, it directly refers to the Undefeated God Sun – something pagan, something ancestral, yet something which even Christianity assimilated and made it its own (let’s think about Christmas, just few days ago) – and maybe in this way it clearly marks the fact that Faith No More are still here with their essence still intact. Undefeated. Stars. Great musicians. After a long break, they simply got together once again to do what they do best: music which is expression of their irreverence, of their being epic, of their melancholic part, of their light-hearted nature, of their irony and – at the same time – of their seriousness.
They would never tell you why they chose that title, and there would never be a “definite” explanation of the meaning of their lyrics. Useless to probe these territories. What really matters is that the 10 songs of Sol Invictus are a collection of the more diverse feelings and emotions, with the final result of a picture that can be penetrated and penetrates the listener with immediacy and extreme ease. In my personal opinion Matador is the apex of this opus. Almost an Innuendo (!) in its suite-like structure, in its alternation of full and empty, in the majesty of its final.
And that’s all folks! ;)

Ufomammut + Lili Refrain + Three Eyes Left + Hyperwülff – 12.12.2015 - Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Ufomammut + Lili Refrain + Three Eyes Left + Hyperwülff – 12.12.2015 - Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Three Eyes Left.

Ufomammut + Lili Refrain + Three Eyes Left + Hyperwülff – 12.12.2015 - Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

I have been waiting for a new Ufomammut concert since I first listened to Ecate. From the very beginning I thought of their latest full lenght as simply perfect to be performed live. I had to wait a few months, but in the end it was worth it!

Hyperwülff - duo from Bologna - opens the evening with their sludgy, doomy post hardcore worthy of the best years of the genre. Powerful and enthralling, their extremely thick wall of sound let think of a six members combo (like Cult of Luna) on stage, instead of the two young guys actually performing. Perfect even in the vocals - that really remind me of the first albums of Isis - in just 30 minutes Hyperwüllf win me, bringing me back in time of 10 years, yet without leaving me with the impression of a deja vu.

Then, another band from Bologna: Three Eyes Left. Stoner doom in its pure essence. Obsessive and alienating in their riffs, songs flow on in their bogging magma, well supported by a rightly sick voice, partly reminiscent of a certain Buzz Osborne. After the sludgy fury of the opening, the breaking is abrupt and we get mired in this trip of basses and squared strophes, offspring of such illustrious parents as Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus.

Lili Refrain gets on stage with her guitar, effects and red-black ostrich feather scarf and I am well glad to see her live once again after only two months and half. Her voice and her guitar are always fascinating and captivating: they capture and hypnotize the audience. The set list is focused on Kawax, and Nature Boy and 666 Burns are the apex of a show unfortunately penalized by some technical problems. Amp on stage is not her own and it seems unable to cope with the overlaps of looped guitar riffs, and the sound engineer – a bit absent and inattentive to requests coming from the stage – is lacking in overcoming tecnhical deficiencies. These drawbacks are a bit annoying, anyway they do not overshadow Lili’s talent and her show.

Finally Ufomammut! Great, amazing! Ecate has to be played live: I thought it from the very first moment I listened to it and now I have got the final proof I was right. Perfect marriage of the “ufo” and “mammoth” parts of the band, the new songs are sonic boulders looming upon the audience, stunning it with their psychedelic sounds and spacey dilations of their riffs. Drum is the queen and punctuates the elephantine march of the music of the trio from Tortona. A single hugesuite, a single monolithic musical movement that absorbs and abducts the listener. The quality of sounds improves as the concert goes on, managing to create a sonic dough in which each musical instrument stands out both as a soloist and as a member of a choir: everything melts in a sonic wave which is the whole and the part at the very same time. Since March 2006 (the first time I saw them live…in Bologna!) to present, the sound of the band has changed several times and their concerts have always been an added value for their music. After 10 years since the first live show I can safely say that Ufomammut continue to give all of themselves, and their music – at the same time more psychedelic and more granitic – finds its perfect and ideal fulfillment right on stage.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
(Constellation, 2015)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
(Constellation, 2015)

We are once again charmed and amazed by the new creature conceived by Godspeed You! Black Emperor and this is the proof that the Canadian band is capable of reinventing its music without abandoning the emotive core that marks it. Their fifth full length album powerfully claims attention, especially of those willing to dive only on the surface of it, now that the sensationalist enthusiasm generated by the reunion has waned. Sonic waves opening Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress show from the very beginning that we are swimming in significantly different waters from the ones already known. So heavy and sturdy as never before, Canadians recall undulant drones of last Earth albums (with devastating feedbacks and walls of distortions) more than post rock music – genre of which they are considered among the greatest interpreters. In less than 45 minutes there is no trace of ambient noises, distant voices or sonic fragments that usually enriched the emotionality of past albums. Composed during last tours and already performed live several times, the new opus by GY!BE has been shaped through time until it reached its essential form, proving to be the most synthetic and concise in the band career, yet at the same time the one that mostly exalts the opposites of the poetics of the band. While opening and closing deeply plant their roots in the rock sound of distorted guitars, the central core flows in one of the deepest cosmic oceans ever conceived by the band.

Lili Refrain - Kawax

Lili Refrain – Kawax
(Subsound Records, 2013)

Lili Refrain – Kawax
(Subsound Records, 2013)

When we think about personal and intimate music, performed only by guitar and voice, we don’t think about psychedelic spirals stretched like ivy on walls of drones neither of distortions that wear themselves out and retie themselves in dark mazes generated by a ghostly voice. This is not exactly the traditional, usual, idea of intimacy. Fortunately there are some musicians - like Lili Refrain - that ignore “tradition” concept, conducting the listener to unusual paths without any fear.
As every witness of her concerts knows, the music of the artist from Rome is an intimate interior landscape generated by guitar, pedal effects and voice. Nothing else. We find ourselves in a landscape which is an animated movie worthy of René Laloux creativity. The sound is continuously looped, recalling reflexes of (No Pussyfooting) by Fripp & Eno, while the voice generates gothic and spiritual atmospheres similar to Dead Can Dance. Beyond stylistic references (Kawax could be considered as part of the heavy and cosmic drone music as last Earth albums and Harvestman project by Steve Von Till are), the greatest surprise, about Lili’s music is its irrepressible personality and her typical feminine sensibility that makes it unique and absolutely wonderful.

Disappears + His Clancyness – 05.12.2015 – Glue (Firenze)

Disappears + His Clancyness – 05.12.2015 – Glue (Firenze)

Disappears + His Clancyness – 12.05.2015 – Glue (Firenze)
The night of Disappears concert is full of pre-Christmas surprises. The first one is the absurd club where they perform: Glue in Florence. The second one is the sound of the band: electric, carnal and visceral, while on records it seems to come from a black hole lost in space.
Let’s start from the beginning: Glue is a cultural social club situated in a sport center, in the backyard of a café that is also the entrance of the tennis court. In the same place where at night you can find concerts and movies, during the day you can practice pilates and Argentine tango courses. The atmosphere is surreal. A big and empty room similar to a dance hall for retired people, some chairs along the walls, dazzling lights like at a school party, while it flares up an high volume electronic music djset. If you are a member of the association you have free access to the concert:  so we are surrounded by college students more interested in taranta music than in post-punk, toxic waste from CSOA, indie-music-egghead, people ended up there by chance,  curious passerbies, pain in the ass, and a very few people really interested in music.

In this poorly mixed jungle His Clancyness play a 35 minute live act: a well executed darkwave focused on really nice melodies, surely inspired by Chameleons music, yet closer to Editors dark indie-pop. Musically  essential, with simple but effective arrangements, Jonathan Clancy (from Settlefish) band essays also some shoegaze shimmer: yet the best moments are those sketching bittersweet pop-darkwave melodies. Really interesting dicovery!
Disappears amaze us from the very beginning because of the absence of any electronic device, while on records it seems that music of drums, bass guitar and guitars is molded by electronic. The four members execute a noisy and obsessive post-punk exclusively with electric instruments - although they modulate the sound with a lot of pedal effects. What astonishes us - in comparison to the recording - is above all the essentiality of rhythmic session, bare of fade-in and fade-out effects and others variations of the dynamic used by John Congleton in order to enrich the last, really beautiful, album. Never rhythmically static, the prodigious performance of Noah Leger at the drums (three years ago he became the new drummer of the band, after the departure of Steve Shelley –ex Sonic Youth) is the added value in the Disappears' music, sounding visceral and human in live shows. While Brian Case plays at being the artist devastated by excesses (a sort of Pierpaolo Capovilla from Chicago), his sour, dissonant and noisy guitar recalls The Jesus Lizard, becoming the counterpoint of the spacy, obsessive, almost trip-hoppy Jonathan Van Herik guitar. Not so noir and enveloping as in the last studio album (Irreal), Disappears growl with a stunning and paranoiac music, a mix of noise rock, post-punk and kraut-rock, that reaches its peak with the superb Halcyon Days. Great Christmas surprise!

Vektor + Angelus Apatrida – 27/11/2015 - Exenzia Rock Club (Prato)

Vektor + Angelus Apatrida – 27/11/2015 - Exenzia Rock Club (Prato)

Vektor + Angelus Apatrida – 11/27/2015 - Exenzia Rock Club (Prato)

In 10 days we are facing fathers and sons of sci-fi thrash metal: Voivod and Vektor. After the great concert of the Canadian band, Vektor prove to be their worthy heirs, showing also a strong personality.

Before Vektor take control of the Exenzia stage, it’s the moment of Angelus Apatrida. The Spanish band slams onto our faces a passionate old school thrash metal with an uncontainable energy. Enthralling as the most furious Slayer side, amusing as the drunkest Anthrax side, the Spanish combo plays a classic - yet never predictable! - thrash metal music. Technically impeccable (monstrous is the rhythmic session assault, and so it is the solos refinement), Angelus Apatrida induce headbanging in every authentic thrash metal passionate as in the golden era of this genre. Amazing discovery!

Vektor are greeted by the audience - small in numbers, but definetely really enthusiastic! - confirming the cult status of the band: a combo considered as one of the most interesting metal act in the underground. Enhanced by exceptional sounds, Vektor - after a brief spatial arpeggio - take off at the speed of light, direction Cosmos. The universe in which we are led is twisted, mazy, surreal, ruled by cold technological machines that appear to come from an absurd retro-futuristic dream. We are in a B series sci-fi story of the fifties, imagining a future that will never be realized.  Frenetic Blake Anderson groove (whose modern drumming technique, inspired by musicians such as Allen Blickle of Baroness, is anyway 80s inspired as the stylistic approach of all the other members of the band), donate unrestrainable dynamism and energy to such a technical and complex music, making it so exciting, imaginative and colourful to result almost immediate. Disciples demonstrated to be ready to take the reign of cosmic thrash metal from the hands of its own masters!

Minsk - The Crash and the Draw

Minsk – The Crash and the Draw
(Relapse Records, 2015)

Minsk – The Crash and the Draw
(Relapse Records, 2015)

What had happened to Minsk? In quiescent phase for some years, deprived of the bass player and composer Sanford Parker, the only thing that remains of them is the memory of the volcanic explosions of the masterpiece The Ritual Fire of Abandonment, with a too little hope of an awakening worthy of them. On the contrary, the Illinois band rises from its own ashes thanks to the the will of singer/guitar player Chris Bennett and singer/keyboard player Tim Mead, generating a 75 minutes volcano that retraces the style of an old-fashioned genre, but with such intensity and expressive power that never sounds manneristic or "already listened". As much devastating in its sludgy hammered strucks as in its hardcore fits of anger (opening track, To The Initiate, is relevant in this sense), Minsk abandone psychedelic tribal rhytmics of the past, in favor of pure power, melodically softened by melancholic, vaguely oneiric, post rock melodies. Music, to which Parker continues to contribute in the production phase, is complex and ambitious, sometimes even progressive (Onward Procession suite, divided in four parts, is a good example of this tendency), demonstrating that Minsk came back to produce something new, not making a simple revival of what they were. Their volcano, although it will not relight post metal flames, it is in eruptive phase, and it will be a sort of lighthouse for those fascinated by post-* sounds.

Carcass - Heartwork

Carcass – Heartwork
(Earache, 1993)

Carcass – Heartwork
(Earache, 1993)

One of the most important bands in grindcore scene, Carcass made the great jump into melody in 1993. Abandoned extreme sounds and gore imaginary, the English band composed a masterpiece of death metal, with deep melodic sensibility. Heartwork is violent and fast, explicit and evil, but it has got even heavy mid tempo riffs and dreadful screams (only by Jeff Walker), more obscure and less rotten than in the past. Heartwork is surgical and sharp death metal and - together with Individual Thought Patterns -  it is the peak of a technical way to play heavy music. In this album nothing is superfluous despite the complexity, and its combination of visceral strength, ambition and melodic research changed the perspective of heavy metal, spreading the seeds of Swedish melodic death metal.

Hey Colossus - In Black and Gold

Hey Colossus – In Black and Gold
(Rocket Recordings, 2015)

Hey Colossus – In Black and Gold
(Rocket Recordings, 2015)

“Passengers are kindly requested to be seated, fasten the seat belts and get ready for takeoff”. Hold On, opening track of the seventh Hey Colossus album, warns us that the journey is nearing its start. Indeed take off delays its coming and we remain suspended in a strange psychedelic bubble, among ambient drops, vocal reverbs and cosmic throbbing. The effect - induced by enveloping rhythmic in slow motion - is estranging. We are bounced by the dub gait of the songs, and then swaddled by flexuous space rock riffs (like listening to Phase V by 35007 remixed by Justin Broadrick, after he has smoked marijuana). First album under Rocket Recordings for the Londoner band owns 40 years old kraut rock spirit, but it is firmly anchored to modernity - if not even projected to the future! Suffused and vaporous (Sisters and Brothers), it is at the same time an earthly album (think of Black and Gold, with a dark crooner voice), and sturdy (the beautiful Sinking, Feeling - ending jewel with a taste of doom and slowcore) that has its strength in tension control. In Black and Gold tension never explodes, neither it takes off to the deepest space, but with its constant cosmos contemplation it is an extraordinarily fascinating psychedelic album.

Carcass + Obituary + Napalm Death + Voivod – Deathcrusher Tour – Estragon (Bologna) - 17/11/2015

Carcass + Obituary + Napalm Death + Voivod – Deathcrusher Tour – Estragon (Bologna) - 17/11/2015

Come tornare bambini. Peace, Love and Death Metal!

Carcass + Obituary + Napalm Death + Voivod – Deathcrusher Tour – Estragon (Bologna) - 11/17/2015

Metal lives in a parallel world. This is the reason why it brings us back to adolescence and exalts us like no other musical genre. Temporally it is on a planet in which the calendar is located between 80s and 90s, long before the advent of jihadist terrorism in occidental society. Spatially it is light years away from Paris, where just 4 days before Deathcrusher Tour Italian gig, Eagles of Death Metal concert was devastated by the madness of terrorists. This is the reason why we can not be surprised if 4 bands, veterans of stages around the world, do not mention (except for a vague reference by Shane Embury from Napalm Death about the madness of all religions) Le Bataclan massacre. This is not surprising, yet it is unforgivable.
In the same way it is unforgivable, in the surreal psychotic atmosphere that envelops Europe in these days, that there is no real security control at a rock concert in such a big club, filled to its maximum capacity.
Fortunately, this kind of music is capable to bring us back to adolescence, when real world problems were light years away from our perception. Grandeur of Deathcrusher Tour bill is a real journey through time, and in the end this will be remembered as a memorable event.

Lost the chance to listen to the opening band, Herod, because the festival beginning is inexcusably  anticipated of almost half an hour, Voivod welcome us to Estragon. The Canadian band, with its sci-fi thrash metal, brings us into the parallel world of heavy metal through the main entrance. Melodically aliens and rhythmically cold like machines, Voivod create a retro-futurist world with cerebral, contorted shapes, without abandoning the sense of humour. Their vision has got human warmth, and indeed we can perceive the funny spirit of the four members, despite of all the time elapsed from the beginning of their career, and the passing of a fundamental member as Piggy  was (and he is heartily remembered by Snake). Exalting is Away performance on drums: powerful, groovy and dynamic. Their future, observed by the past, is still relevant nowadays.

Napalm Death have got the task to bring us back to the rottenness of planet Earth. English band gets on the stage without singer “Barney” Greenway: this change in the band line up could generate vivid disappointment, instead it proves to be a great discovery. His substitute (Chris Reese from Corrupt Moral Altar) never gets tired of roaring his massive energy onto the audience. The young guy is completely at ease on stage, and he succeeds in a seemingly impossible task. What is not properly convincing in their show are sounds: too much compressed and without midrange frequencies, they make it difficult to sustain their sonic assault. These sounds, much closer to industrial than to grindcore, have got a lot of affinity with recent compositions of the band, but their not perfect balance weaks the otherwise relentless violence of the band.

On the contrary the sound balance of Obituary live set is extraordinary. Heavy, mighty, rotten:  Obituary sound is perfect for enhancing the music of a completely fit band. Confirming the exaltation aroused with its concert in summer 2014 in Pisa, the band from Florida is the most amazing of the evening, and it brings us in a comics world full of horror images. John Tardy voice is muddy, sickening and it sounds even more devastating than at the beginning of his career. Echoing solos seem to come from a parallel dimension imagined by Lovecraft, and they sound mystical and estranging, in the sludgy flow of distortions. Powerful drums pull guitars riffs, and when the music abandons the fury to slow down, the public seems mired in the quicksand. Memorable.

Then, a real stroke of a razor – opposite to the colossal heaviness of Obituary – hits Estragon audience. Razor-sharp Carcass music is played by infallible surgeons (for their incredible musical skills) and morbidly merciless serial killers (for the perversion of the melodies). As a crazy Victor Frankestein, the English band has discomposed and reassembled heavy music, during its career, through epochal albums made by both savage brutality and magnificent elegance. In 2015 they have got nothing more of the black humour of the beginnings, neither the death n’ roll fun of the criticized Swansong (and despite criticism of the time, the band plays some tracks from that era). Indeed, they are focused on present melodic research, evolution of their progressive side (that reaches the apex with masterpieces as Necroticism and Heartwork), showing how much they still – rightly – trust on their compositional ability. Charismatic and magnetic Jeff Walker, together with Bill Steer (directly coming from the 70s), succeeds in recreating the magical perversion of early 90s Carcass, enriching it with a melodic taste that recalls that Swedish death metal scene so much influenced by Carcass themselves. A band at the height of its creative drive that juxtaposes great new music to songs that have already taken their place in the history of heavy metal.

One of the most intense live shows of the year - especially for the amazing performance by Obituary and Carcass. A journey into the extreme metal parallel world, characterized by fun, beer, wild mosh and horns up! It is almost like being teens once again! In short, that is what a rock concert has to be: Peace, Love and Death Metal!

Shining + Darkend + Selvans + Malnàtt + Sulfur – 07.11.2015 – Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Shining + Darkend + Selvans + Malnàtt + Sulfur – 07.11.2015 – Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

“Last and least” Shining. Potrei limitarmi a dire “imbarazzante”.

Shining + Darkend + Selvans + Malnàtt + Sulfur – 11.07.2015 – Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Sooner or later the long sequence of great concerts of this autumn had to stop. Well, it was not necessary to interrupt it in such a drastic way. Shining concert – the Swedish Shining, by Niklas Kvarforth – gets right at the first step of the podium of the 5 worsts concerts of my life. But let proceed with order: it is not all to be thrown in the dustbin in this evening. It is a sort of “decreasing” evening.

Tuscan Sulfur as opening. Their doom metal is a really good prelude for the evening: mighty and full of energy, with captivating vocals (especially in the growl parts), they also have got really interesting melodies.

Then Malnàtt (from Bologna), and their coming up on stage tells everything about their show. Skull masks, black hood and Pan flutes for their leader and a great attack as much heavy as thrash-death. Halfway between serious and humorous, in part for the lyrics, in part for how they stand on the stage, and in great part for Porz talks, Malnàtt should open the eyes of the audience about what awaits them: “a lot of smoke and little roast”. What really counts are the masks, aren’t they? Porz even inserts earplugs in his ears while on stage with microphone in his hand. And with mockeries and jokes to those he defines “blackisti”, their half an hour concert is the musical – and not only musical – apex of this evening.

Selvans – from Abruzzo with folklore – let us immediately understand what was alluding Porz with the black cloth over his head. They are a really good band, that is for sure: their atmospheric black metal is compelling and they are really skilful as musicians. Beautiful samples enrich their songs, without saturating them or flattening them on recordings…but one should listen to them with closed curtain. Too many poses, too many scenographies. The ostentatious display of anger and evil is ridiculed by the two images of Pan (yes, the same god Pan of Porz’ flutes…ask yourself why…) on stage: a Pan which has nothing of the satyr, being just a lascivious, flirtatious pimp. And what about the wolf mask worn by the singer and making him completely voiceless? It is worth listen to them on cd. But, please, avoid concerts. Their music is definitely good and their songs, live, have got a great, beautiful impact: but the way they stay on the stage obscures almost all their value.

Darkend confirm the impression of their show in Brescia three weeks before (playing as openers for Forgotten Tomb). And this time defects are more evident because of the really awful sounds.

“Last and least” Shining. I could just say “embarrassing”. But I do want to give you some more details. Niklas Kvarforth is completely voiceless and his band plays rambling and limp while he behaves like a small spoiled child (sorry, but this is the best way I can describe him!) in such a way that even Axl Rose in his heyday would have paled! It is enough to say that after only 5/10 minutes from the beginning of the concert he got off the stage visibly testy and angry after the shell game with all the microphones on stage, pretending a technical problem (for sure a real one in his head), while the rest of the band (badly) play Sweet Child o' Mine!!! Suicidal depressive black metal? …what??? Forget the atmospheres once loved in amazing albums as V - Halmstad: nothing more sounds gloomy, melancholic, torn or sick. The wonderful Neka Morgondagen is literally mangled by a “non voice” and a live arrangement a million miles far away from the anguished gloom and melancholy of the studio version. Supported by a band that could hardly try to play as a cover band of some 80s glam combo, Niklas Kvarforth is just a series of bungled poses and a musical zero.
Delusion of a midautumn night. Yet it opens to reflections on a musical world too often in search of an author. A bit of theatricality never disturbs anyone. Nobody displeases a good presence on stage – and video projections, light effects, and more or less original looks more or less typical of a certain musical genre. But what is important – what has to be important – is Music. All the rest is just subsidiary.
