Nile + Suffocation – 22.09.2015 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Nile + Suffocation – 09.22.2015 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

In the sweltering heat of Cycle Club there is clear evidence of the enthusiasm typical of great events: two of the most fundamental bands for the history of death metal together on the same stage.

First of all Suffocation. Though without their historical singer Frank Mullen, they prove to be a devastating war machine, thanks also to the touring vocalist, the mighty Ricky Myers (Disgorge drummer), characterized by a great cavernous guttural growl. The surgical accuracy of their show makes their frontal assaults compact and penetrating, without loosing one drop of their raw brutality. Direct, fast – yet never repetitive or without groove – they rarely slow down their run (…and in those rare moments the effect is definitely overpowering!). This, together with their hardcore attitude, excites the audience – often dragged in a whirling mosh – that elects them the absolute matadors of this night.

Nile, the proper headliner of this gig, nearly risk to be overshadowed by the terrific show of Suffocation. Yet the South Carolina band – a real legend of the second death metal wave – exploits all its experience to raze to the ground the venue. Massive and powerful like an Egyptian pyramid, they do not focus on compressed sounds as Suffocation do: they raise a sandstorm thanks to their dirty distorsions, without loosing melodic clarity. If, on a side, the wall of sound erected by Nile is huge, on the other side their music is sophisticated and fascinating, thanks to both the melodic refinement of the oriental flavored riffs and the complexity of songs. More complicated and, in some way, less devastating than Suffocation, Nile are able to recreate the sepulchral atmosphere of an Egyptian tomb in the boling heat of Cycle Club, mostly through Karl Sanders cavernous voice and mastodontic slowdowns breaking up at times their music speed. Heirs of muddy spiritual Morbid Angel death metal, Nile are the final clash between brutality and atmosphere, chaos and melody.

Thanks to the large attendance, the concert of September 22nd 2015 seems to directly come from the 90s – a sensation which results amplified by the collaborative spirit (Myers gets on stage to sing together with Nile during their show) of a scene which makes underground its own home.
