Saturnus + Autumnal + Helevorn – 19.09.2015 – Colony, Brescia

Saturnus + Autumnal + Helevorn – 19.09.2015 – Colony, Brescia

Infine i Saturnus.

Saturnus + Autumnal + Helevorn – 09.19.2015 – Colony, Brescia

3 bands, 3 hours of doom. A band that I know pretty well - I already heard them in concert almost two years ago - and two bands that were an absolute prima for me.
Helevorn open the evening. 45 minutes of classic doom metal, with reminders of My Dying Bride and Saturnus themselves, in which growl and clean vocals – a sort of recitative, at times – alternate on patterns of guitars and bass, enriched by keyboard. Helevorn music is exciting, but their concert results affected by clean vocals: while growl is powerful and captivating, clean vocals is shaky in more than one passage, often coming out of tune. A real shame!
Then is the turn of Autumnal. It’s their last night on tour with Saturnus, and their show is full of all the enthusiasm of those one arrived at the last chapter of a venture and want to end it in grand style. The stage burst with energy and their doom is fortified by a rock vein which makes their songs even more enthrolling. Side note, a funny one: during their concert, Saturnus (and Helevorn too!) got on stage with all Autumnal luggages…an ironic and warm greeting to their tour fellows throghout half Europe.
In the end, Saturnus. An hour and half of doom metal that overwhelm the listener. If their songs are emotional, powerful and impressive on records, live dimension amplifies all these sensations and it really becomes the extra value of the danish band. I already experienced this feeling when I saw them on stage the first time (January 2014, Cycle Club – Calenzano, Firenze) and I was really impressed by their skill. Almost two years later, this second live show confirm that amazing sensation: Saturnus music finds its own accomplishment in concerts, through the energy of the six musicians on stage. Slowed down and massive rhythmic of bass and drums, together with the accuracy and power of guitar riffs and the breadth of keyboard chords, create a wall of sound that flows onto the listener dragging him in its dynamic. Jensen voice never misses a beat, and his deep and profound growl is a kind of mantra – gloomy and desolate. Guitar solos enrich songs textures thanks to their melancholy and their sort of death metal pace. There are some spots of light, and the moments of clarity which capture and enchant the audience are mostly keyboard intros: effective piano sonatas that break through the curtains of basses and then plunge again deeply into them. Saturnus play with passion and energy, giving to spectators – not so many, but surely warm and attentive – a great concert and the wish to see them live again.
