Disappears – Irreal

Disappears – Irreal
(Kranky Records, 2015)

Disappears – Irreal
(Kranky Records, 2015)

Obsessive flashing of notorious club signboards escorts us during the trip with Disappears in the nocturnal and chilly Chicago. A long journey by car among the monolithic skyscrapers of an alienating metropolis: this is Irreal. Before dissolving into the dirty fog of Navigating the Void, music waves sinuous and charming in the darkest corners of the city, where desolation and desire hide. There is sexual attraction in the enveloping trip hop rhythms, yet this is perversely deviated by crooked melodies photographing an ubiquitous squalor and inducing an unhealthy hallucinatory feeling. The most obvious reference is the recent music by Swans, but the exhausted tone of Brian Case's voice is not apocalyptic: it is disillusioned. Hidden among the misty darkwave atmospheres there are feelings of discomfort and distress, generated by dissonant arpeggios and mazy structures at the borders of krautrock. Entrusted to John Congleton, production emphasizes the alienation induced by music, endlessly amplifying the rhythmic spirals and wrapping each flash of humanity with a haze of reverb. The Illinois band plays hypnotic, dark, obsessive and, with Irreal, it generates a magnetic nightmare from which it seems impossible to awaken.
