Black Rainbows + Mr. Bison + Nasty Farmers + Guzen – 16.04.2016 – BPM Club (Livorno)

Black Rainbows + Mr. Bison + Nasty Farmers + Guzen – 16.04.2016 – BPM Club (Livorno)

Seguono i pisani Nasty Farmers.

Black Rainbows + Mr. Bison + Nasty Farmers + Guzen – 04.16.2016 – BPM Club (Livorno)

After Hawkdope release and my “love” for this album, attending to Black Rainbows concert nearly became a need. A need that I could not satisfy. Then it is time for the release of Stellar Prophecy and suddenly I find them practically next door, at BPM Club in Livorno.

The evening begins with Guzen. Crossover in the sense that they go through - and mix together - many different genres, the young guys from Livorno find their inspiration in 90s alternative rock, focusing on the blend of funky sounds and rhythms together with hardcore singing. The extreme stylistic variety of their songs, supported by a quite remarkable talent, makes immediately evident the good ideas and will to experiment of this quintet still in search of its trademark. Premises are really interesting and their youth bodes well.

Then Nasty Farmers, from Pisa. They play a bluesy rock, with touches of stoner and southern influences. It is a bit more classic sound and it tends to be engulfed and obscured by the mighty distortions of the other bands. Yet for sure it is the sound setting – with the bass guitar absorbing and covering everything else with its volume – what mostly penalized the band, making impossible to understand its value for those who (like me!) do not already know them.

It is time for Mr. Bison. And now we get into the heart of this evening. Sounds become heavier, distortion takes its leading role, and drums become the backbone of this trio which is free from the bass, but has a guitar that has got bass style and has learned its lesson.  Pure stoner: definitely heavy, but with an amazing groove maybe due to hard rock infiltrations on a side and almost funky ones on the other. Enthralling and flawless drums, basis for riffs of the two guitars and vocal lines of the two singers – a clean voice alternating with a dirty, dusty one. Funny and groovy, with their just released Asteroid they are the perfect opener for the trio from Roma.

Finally Black Rainbows! Their brand new Stellar Prophecy was out yesterday and I think I am going to listen to a lot of the new songs. On the contrary the setlist is varied and there are many of the grooviest tracks of Hawkdope – from The Prophet to the titletrack, passing through Hypnotize My Soul With Rock N' Roll (which starts as soon as it is loudly requested by someone in in the audience). The beauty and power of Black Rainbows songs are intensified during the concert thanks to a less refined sound (indeed it is more direct, at times almost lo-fi) and dilations and re-arrangements. In this light, maybe the ending song (already ending track on Holy Moon) Black To Comm - by MC5 – stands out above all the others, sounding even more space and psych than on recordings. Black Rainbows two pillars – the dusty/distorted/super-fuzzy/groovy soul and the psychedelic/space/“hanging-rocking-on-the-moon” soul – find on stage their enhancement and their accomplishment thanks to the perfect fusion of their strength – a strength which is at the same time overwhelming and miring. Just one hour of music, bringing you through a sandy desert, canyons and cactus in a wild ride on a motorbike, then leaving you suspended between dream and reality as in Zabriskie Point. And it remains the will to do this trip once again…!
