Il venerdì di pasqua decido
di "santificarlo" con un bel concerto. Oltretutto suonano gli Zippo.
E il loro quarto album – After Us – è
appena uscito.
In realtà non suonano solo
gli Zippo, al No Cage. Ci sono ben altre tre bands che fanno rockabilly in
varie declinazioni: Hot Rod Surfers, Contessa and the Squires, Bone Machine. La
serata me la seguo tutta e mi diverto. Ma sul genere non sono ferrata, sono lì
per sentire i nuovi pezzi del quartetto di Pescara…e quindi non posso che
scrivere solo di loro!
L’attacco è Low Song, potente opener del nuovo album,
che cattura e ipnotizza col suo mantra e la potenza distorta dei riffs, e fa
subito capire che la band ha definitivamente assimilato la nuova formazione “a
quattro”, con una sola chitarra. Le nuove canzoni sono monoliti dotati di vita
propria e - collocati uno a fianco all’altro - creano una sorta di Stonehenge.
La voce di Dave è impeccabile: nella dimensione live la sua versatilità e la
sua profondità incantano l’ascoltatore, conducendolo dentro ad ogni pezzo. La
sessione ritmica è imponente, ed il basso di Stonino crea dei patterns – a
volte pulti, a volte potentemente distorti – con i quali si fonde una chitarra
che alterna parti più stoner e (quasi) grunge ad altre più sludge, innalzando
un muro di suono in cui si vorrebbe entrare e fondersi. Il concerto è incentrato
sul nuovo After Us, ma il finale è
lasciato alla “classica” The Elephant
March. In 10 anni l’elefante è cresciuto e i suoi passi lasciano
un’impronta ancora più profonda: ma non vi è alcuna traccia di polvere sul
pachiderma.
La fine del concerto arriva
davvero troppo presto. Ma questo non può che essere un invito per una nuova
data!

I decide to “sanctify” this
Easter Friday with a concert. Zippo are going to play tonight. And their
fourth album – After Us – has just
been released.
Well, tonight at No Cage
there are not only Zippo. Three more bands are going to play rockabilly in
various forms: Hot Rod Surfers, Contessa and the Squires, Bone Machine. I
listen to all their shows and I enjoy the whole thing. But I have to admit that
I am not so familiar with this genre, and I am here to listen to the new songs
of the quartet from Pescara…and so I can only write about them!
The opener is Low Song, the mighty first track of the
new album. It captures and hypnotizes with its mantra and the mighty distortion
of its riffs. One immediately realizes that the band definetely assimilated the
new configuration with four members and just one guitar. New songs are
monoliths with their own life and – one next to the other – they form a sort of
Stonehenge. Dave’s voice is flawless: in live dimension its versatility and
depth enchant the listener, leading him inside each song. Rhythm section is
striking and Stonino’s bass creates patterns – at times clean, at times
powerfully distorted – capable of merging with a guitar which alternates stoner
and (almost) grungy parts with sludgy ones. The outcome is a wall of sound in
which you desire to enter and to be incorporated. The whole show is focused on After Us, but the ending is entrusted to
the “classic” The Elephant March. In
10 years time the elephant has grown up and his steps leave deeper footprints:
yet ther is no trace of dust on the pachyderm.
The end of the concert
really comes too soon. But this can only be an invitation for a new date!
