Desertfest London 2016 - Day 2

Desertfest London 2016 – Day 2
[Russian Circles + Samothrace + Spider Kitten + Conan + Monomyth]

H 14.30, Electric Ballroom: Monomyth.

Grandiosi!

Desertfest London 2016 – Day 2
[Russian Circles + Samothrace + Spider Kitten + Conan + Monomyth]

H 2.30 pm, Electric Ballroom: Monomyth. The 2nd day of the festival begins from this stage and it really starts in the best way. With the music of the Dutch band we find ourselves immersed in a highly hypnotic and compelling instrumental space rock, son of the early Ozric Tentacles and with magnetic hints of kosmische music reminiscent of Tangerine Dream Phaedra. Continuous flows of lysergic lava overwhelming and at the same time elevating the listener. It is the early afternoon of a sunny springtime day, but we soon loose space-time coordinates and we start swaying and twirling on the hypnotic enthralling rhythms of bass and drums (where we find Sander Evers, formerly with 35007) and on the perfect weavings of psychedelic melodies of guitar, synth and keyboars. Simply flawless, Monomyth gain their place on the podium of the best bands at this Desertfest!

We remain at the Electric Ballroom, but we go upstairs waiting for Conan. Considered the huge crowd getting into the venue – as well as the enormous quantity of t-shirts, caps and patches of the Liverpool band worn by Desertfest people! – and the devastating sound of the English combo, we can only expect that the hall collapses onto itself. And we have to say we were right. It is just 4:00 pm and it is only the second band on this stage, yet the welcome is that usually reserved to headliners (and after the show we even discover that there were people who were not able to get into the venue because it was fully packed!). They totally deserve this welcome! The power trio dirty cavernous sludge flows onto the audience with waves of rotting power – made thicker by the ultra-lowered tuning and more disturbing thanks to the “dying-wicked-witch” singing which keeps its raw wickedness even in the live dimension. This band deservedly raises British pride, being able to compete with the most blazoned names of the genre (usually American). The whole enriched by the extraordinary videos of the band.

It is time for a beer break and a glimpse of sun from the “courtyard” of Greenland Place. After this quick moment of light, we go into the darkness of Our Black Heart to listen to Spider Kitten - almost stuck to them, almost on stage with them. It is evident: we are definitely fascinated by small clubs! With the heaviness of some of the most beautiful Melvins records (Bullhead, just to mention one of them) and the Alice-In-Chains-like doubled hallucinated vocals, the band from Cardiff plays a mighty crooked stoner-doom capable of enchanting all the presents. Drums are masterly and are almost the load-bearing structure of guitar riffs with really enthralling sound and power. The melodic weaving of vocals perfectly matches with the ultra-heavy sounds, enhancing the stunning force of their music. One of the revelations of this afternoon!

The next leg of this second day of the festival is The Underworld with Samothrace concert. Drones and walls of sounds “as if there were no tomorrow”. Everything slows down, there is a tendency to immobility. Facing a drummer giving crazy strokes on ultra high cymbals and a singer screeching and hissing into the microphone, we get bogged down in their riffs and dilated melodies. Perfect music for this basement in which the annihilating power of distortions is amplified and enhanced by amazing sounds. There is Earth dazing hypnosis in this really interesting American band. It is a real pity to be able to listen to just a half hour of their live: even today Desertfest is sold out and we cannot miss Electric Ballroom headliner, we cannot risk to remain out of the venue on Camden High Street.

Here we are in the presence of Russian Circles. A blast from the past, to the golden age in which post-core and post-rock melt together into a new musical entity. The trio from Chicago shows how much this genre can sound modern even in 2016, and it proves to be able to play even greater shows than the most famous names of the genre in their heyday. The oneiric contemplative melancholy typical of post-rock is made darker and mysterious thanks to almost post black metal atmospheres, while obsessive weavings of arpeggios build mazy structures. What is most impressive in this band is how much they sound more powerful, dynamic and direct in concert thanks to Dave Turnkrantz drums: the ace in hole which often lacked to the giants of the genre. In this burst of energy, the filmic atmospheres (always a trademark of the band) are not clouded, yet they get new hues. Russian Circles prove to have all the electric power usually associated with the power trio and at the same time the complexity and melodic sensitivity of a progressive rock band. Awesome!
