Beastmaker – Inside the Skull

Beastmaker – Inside the Skull
(Rise Above Records, 2017)

Dolcetto o scherzetto?

Beastmaker – Inside the Skull
(Rise Above Records, 2017)

Trick or treat? Beastmaker come back to ring the doorbell of our home to offer us all their repertoire of horror atmospheres worthy of Hammer's movies. We welcome them with candelabra covered with cobwebs, pumpkins with bad grin, plastic bats. They treat us to drinks (and not only that!). Their clothes smell of marijuana smoke more than that of the incense used during black masses, indeed. We enthusiastically accept their (deliberately) outdated disguise, studied in the slightest detail, showing how much these three Californian guys are sincere passionate about horror movies of the past, when special effects were exclusively characterized by liters and liters of fake blood. The recipe is the same as last year's Halloween, with the wonderful debut album Lusus Naturae. Sulfur smelly sabbathian riffs, with an exciting groove, together with crooked acid melodies swaying back and forth as macabre lullabies. This year they bring us a couple of duets with Johanna Sadonis (Lucifer) and a massive dose of fiery metal guitar solos. But as a whole the three from Fresno preferred to leave unchanged the formula that entertain ourselves a lot last year. Short straightforward songs, rooted in the most classic doom, but with elasticity and energy typical of stoner. Strong riffs, grim arpeggios, macabre and obsessive refrain. Beastmaker are certainly not a band able to create surprise effects, coups de théâtre or jumping on the chair, but they are masters of the art of creating atmosphere. The best sons of the (Evil) flowers with whom to spend Halloween night. Light up the candles (and not just those!): we're going to have fun!

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 3

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 3
[Conan + Melvins + Kadavar + Saint Vitus + Church of Misery + Monolord + High Fighter]

Imperdibili.

Sullo stesso palco salgono poi i Church of Misery. Incredibili!

“Every time I'm on the street/ People laugh and point at me/ They talk about my length of hair / And the out of date clothes I wear…” "I know I don't belong/ And there's nothing I can do/ I was born too late/ And I'll never be like you"

Pubblico impietrito davanti a cotanta devastante potenza. Immensi.

Ma come recita l'ultima pagina del librettino dell'evento "Thanks for coming, see you next year!".

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 3
[Conan + Melvins + Kadavar + Saint Vitus + Church of Misery + Monolord + High Fighter]

Here we are at the grand finale. Last day of festival. With the wicked cool bill. We were expecting fireworks from this last day. And what we experienced was a real show of fire explosions, one better than the other.

Let's start with some sparks of High Fighter music at the Canyon Stage. The taste is characterized by powerful sounds of great impact, and a femal voice that gives the best of itself when it pushes on roughness. When their sludge/stoner turns to alternative rock melodies they lose a little bit of drive, however overall they prove to be interesting.

True fireworks start when we enter the Desert Stage for Monolord. Beatles music welcomes us in the hall, and the fab four dj's selection is perfect (and absolutely not to be taken for granted!) for the festival day we're going to face. It's been a year and a half since that Desertfest London where Monolord left us gobsmacked in the beautiful frame of Koko, and in the meantime we loved their Vaenir, so the desire to see them live once again is enormous. The venue is crowded, and the whole audience is overwhelmed by the sound power of the Swedish trio, whose slow-burning riffs are both heavy and gigantic to fill the entire hall, and so dynamic to shake it from the foundation. As a cloud of psychedelic smoke Thomas Jäger delayed voice envelops the audience, and the great impression left by the brand new songs, with their perfect combination of sound refinement and simple effective melodies, make us think of Monolord as doom metal fab three. Not to mention songs like Empress Rising (for us already a classic!), sort of doomish I Want You (She's So Heavy)! Unmissable.

The, on the same stage, Church of Misery. With a completely renewed lineup (for the second time in 2 years), bassist Tatsu Mikami, the only historical member of the band, rattles off a series of gruesome serial killer stories in sludge sauce (in the original sense of the term). Having a Japanese Phil Anselmo (Hiroyuki Takano) joins even more the band to Down. Japan you do not expect and that surprises you. Although the taste for the extreme and the disturbance in the Japanese unferground is well known, you certainly would not expect a stoner doom of Southern descent, rich in enthralling groove. Noisy, crazy, funny and with a sick aftertaste (this indeed so typical of alternative rock with almond eyes!). Incredible!

“Every time I'm on the street/ People laugh and point at me/ They talk about my length of hair / And the out of date clothes I wear…” If there is a band that has always been out of fashion, and has always boasted about it, that band is Saint Vitus. Now that the doom revival doom is in full swing, the cult status of the band is granitic and untouchable. Although they are no longer outsiders, Saint Vitus have not lost the underground attitude as they show live today. Scott Reagers is the classic metalhead father who everyone would dream of having: far away from the present, he enjoys himself together with us (his children!) following him from below the stage! And his voice is still powerful and full with incredible energy! Indeed, we are talking about the one who forged the first historical album of the band, along with David Chandler! Another sui generis metalhead, Chandler unleashes on the audience an amazing excitement, especially when compared to the pachydermic riffs and the stunning sounds of his guitar. With a bush of hair and a bandana to keep it in position, he is able to release all of his uncontrollable energy with amelodic and schizophrenic solos, in contrast with the dark groove of his riffs. Also remarkable are the two uncles in-law - Pat Bruders and Henry Vasquez - who devise a devastating rhythmic section! For those who are perpetually outdated (even now that the story has overturned the perception of the LA band, making its music "timeless", and no longer "out of time"), this is the perfect concert! After a beautiful Saint Vitus, the finale with Born Too Late goes right in the annals of the best ever. A song which is a synbol and a manifesto of Desertfest audience, dedicated by Chandler to all those present! "I know I don't belong/ And there's nothing I can do/ I was born too late/ And I'll never be like you"

You might already be happy with it... and yet no! Again on Desert Stage (today really impossible to quit!) the German Kadavar make the Trix audience go crazy!!! The entry on the stage of the three Berliners is as delightful and powerful as just a few others. Sounds are mastodontic and the attack of each riff is perfect. The voice of Lupus Lindemann resonates great, without drops or flaws. At the center of the stage, Tiger Bartelt captures the spectator as he is spectacularly perfectly on drums (without lessening his skills as a musician!). And it surprises - and not a little! - that in an hour of music they do not perform one track of the beloved Berlin! Surprising even more if you think that in a setlist without songs from their most successful album to date and largely devoted to the brand new Rough Times, the feeling is that of having had them on stage for 5 minutes or so! Beatles explosive finale with Helter Skelter cover, embellished with dirty underground sounds and the alluring beauty of the 60s. Expectations were high, and they were widely repayed and overcome! Now we just have to wait for their next live and ask them for the full performance of Berlin!

It's then the turn of the headliners. Headliners who do not need presentations and on which is hard to write words that are not nearly idolatry. Seamlessly Melvins sound almost an hour and a quarter of heavy riffs, noise, delirium, and I want to hold your Hand (Beatles again!). All this under the watchful approval of David Chandler, sitting on stage immediately behind them, well visible from the whole audience. Buzz Osborne is increasingly abstract and isolated in his world, and Dale Crover and Steven McDonald are its worthy fellows - and they perform in absurd gags "to cover" the alienation of the big boss. Simply monstrous, they can do what they want and they do what they want. Beacuse whatever they do, they do it amazingly well. Stunned audienced in front of so much devastating power. Gigantic.

It would be almost impossible to leave Desertfest after Melvins show. Organizers know it well, and indeed they scheduled Conan on Canyon Stage. With their very low rotten sounds, they are almost a balm for our ears, and they almost act as a decompression chamber. Always compact and powerful, accompanied on stage by beautiful video animations, the Liverpool doom/sludge trio is definitely a band that cannot be missed by enthusiasts of these sounds. And like a year and a half ago in London, they confirmed to be a band with a big live impact.

This monstruous quality level Sunday, which places itself a span over the rest of the bands of a very rich and top-notch billboard, concludes a Desertfest Antwerp that has been able to reconfirm itself as an unmissable event and perhaps even surpassed last year edition! Saying goodbye to the Trix and all the Desertfest people is one of those moments you would never want to face. But as stated in the last page of the booklet of the event: "Thanks for coming, see you next year!".

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 2

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 2
[Graveyard + Windhand + Beastmaker + Unsane + Church of the Cosmic Skull + White Manna + Stoned Jesus + The Vintage Caravan]

The Mamas & The Papas dello psych-prog.

L'anno scorso avevano dato forfait all'ultimo, lasciando organizzatori e partecipanti a bocca asciutta.

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 2
[Graveyard + Windhand + Beastmaker + Unsane + Church of the Cosmic Skull + White Manna + Stoned Jesus + The Vintage Caravan]

The Sun shines and the air is even warmer than yesterday, and we inaugurate this second - full packed!!! - day at Desertfest with The Vintage Caravan. And it's a start with the bang! They come from a frosty place like Iceland, but their music is burning with energy and passion. With a really inspired mix of psychedelia and vintage hard rock, made of groovy riffs, great phrasings and some really catchy tunes made to win you over at first listening, the Reykjavik trio thrills the incredibly crowded main stage of Trix. And it is really impossible to stand still and not to be dragged from the positive energy of this band!

The second band today are the Ukrainian Stoned Jesus. Stoner doom of Sabbath matrix with the melodic sesitivity of 90s alternative bands, with vocals with strong osbornian connotation. Melodies that appear to come from Seattle "garden of sound" and find their place among powerful and heavy riffs, slow and surgical in their precision. And if we want to find a "flaw" in the Kiev trio, maybe it's just a lack of some unpredictability and of a bit of extra improvisation that would make their music even more vivid and fluid.

Drastic change of direction in the passage to Vulture Stage where White Manna enchant us with their extremely acid psychedelia, absolutely free from rigid structures. Liquid and spatial riffs, which sometimes result in noise dissonances that become real walls of sound above the - load-bearing - carpet of synths of cosmic atmosphere. Splitted voices to make this flood of sounds and sensations even more alienating. A real trip.

And in order to avoid a lack of delirium, Church of the Cosmic Skull is undoubtedly the right choice. Completely white dressed, they get on Canyon Stage accompanied by rainbow projections and mechanical voice-over articulating warnings of both liturgical and lysergic nature. With an abundance of voices and choirs, with a multitude of sounds (including hammond and electric cello), stunned by the many colors of lights and projections, the sensation is to be in front of a freak community, modern The Mamas & The Papas of the psych-prog. A really atypical experience!

The thermal shock of the transition from this ultra-happy party to the A-Clockwork-Orange-ultra-violence of the Unsane is really remarkable. The New York trio annihilates Desert Stage audience with its cutting, lashing, powerful and - at the same time - impeccable songs. Not a yielding in Chris Spencer's voice, nor in Dave Curran's one. Not a flaw in the interweaving of rusty dissonances, not a flaw in the control of feedback and noise. Surgical. One hour of post-hardcore with an elevated content of ferocity. A band with 30 years of career, but that is icon of the present.

After the freezing chill of operating room steel, it is the turn of the molten metal heat, according to the alchemical recipe of the most traditional doom. We do not want to miss a taste of Beastmaker, and so we run upstairs in the Canyon Stage. In the half concert we listen to, the band from Fresno plays only songs from the new Inside the Skull and their live performance is really remarkable. Proudly genre-related, the American band possesses a typically stoner groove in a context of burial doom of sabbathian matrix, with winking at horror rock. Riffs and melodies so much dusty as engaging. Not to be missed!

And we deepen the level of doom with the overwhelming power of Windhand slowness. At times exhausting, but at the same time exciting, thanks to the alienatine and stunning singing of Dorthia Cottrell (a little less psychedelic and a bit darker than in studio recordings). And if at the beginning sounds are not perfect, their tuning reveals the fullness and weight of a music worthy of the best electric wizard, and - on everyone - stand out for Parker Chandler's bass guitar and Garrett Morris's guitar space solos. More than half of the set dedicated to their beautiful latest album - Grief's Infernal Flower - for a live of great fascinaition and impact.

The desire to be able to listen to the highest number of bands we had included in our wishlist, made us run and left us with a few stops. Then we manage to have a little relaxation just before tonight headliners.

Last year they cancelled the show at the last moment, leaving organizers and participants empty-handed. This year Graveyard fix it, with their name in foreground in the rich bill, with a new drummer and in all their greatness. They get on stage on tiptoe with the delicate notes of Slow Motion Countdown, and they sound overwhelming even playing many slow atmospheric pieces. Their songs of 60s and 70s matrix, whose structure has been nourished and is nourished by the sounds of the present, are the peak of the day, and they show how much this band is no dead at all. And if the whole band is made of great musicians, the Joakim Nilsson voice stands out for its beauty and power, echoing at Robert Plant in a few moments. A truly amazing concert, which closes this second day of festival in the best way possible!

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 1

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 1
[Radio Moscow + Lowrider + All Them Witches + Caronte + Kaleidobolt]

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 1
[Radio Moscow + Lowrider + All Them Witches + Caronte + Kaleidobolt]

It's great to be back after an exact year at a festival that you loved so much. Even more if you think that this bill surpasses even the incredible one of last year. Without mentioning the fact that it was almost a trouble to be able to arrive, and in fact I attend the first day basically alone, with the exception of Radio Moscow.

Maybe because it is called Desertfest and perhaps this has its influence, but the weather is beautiful, it's hot and in mid-October I find myself walking to the Trix with the t-shirt and the sun dazzling me. I took the wristband before the opening hour and I am among the first to enter, with confetti to inaugurate what will turn out to be a glorious 3 days.

I immediately grab up the t-shirt of the event and, beer in my hand, I head toward the still semi-empty garden, that soon begins to get crowded with enthusiasts from all over the world. A passage from the Vulture Stage where Kaleidobolt are inaugurating the festival with their proggy psychedelia, with strong seventies flavours and the taste of a jam, and then I head to the top floor.

The first band I focus on is the Italian Caronte who "baptize" the Canyon Stage with its doom ritual, complete with a "blessing" with incense. With their new album - YONI - in upcoming release, the quartet from Parma makes me enter this festival in the darkest and most occult way, through powerful riffs of Electric Wizard inspired doom, from which Dorian Bones powerful emphatic voice distinctively stands out.

However All Them Witches are the ones to get me into the heart of this festival with their vibrations and their incredible groove! Psychedelia, space rock, blues and amazing riffs. The one hour of concert of the Nashville band runs away in a moment, dragged by the quick compact and - sometimes - fragmented rhythmics, with lysergic openings that "dope" the listener even without the help of "additives". A band able to blend together its many influences with an experimental attitude, the result of which is not the simple stratification of its many souls, but a personal and pushing thing, which in the live dimension, even more than on recordings, bewitches the listener. For me, band of the day!

The time of a food-beer-cigarette break in the lively outdoor area, and back in the Desert Stage for the Swedish Lowrider. With only one album in their career (Ode to Io, recorded in 1999 and remastered and reissued this year), the Karlstad quartet has the ability to overheat Trix main stage with its powerful, direct rock stoner of Kyuss descent, made of catchy riffs and refrains that get immediately imprinted into the mind.

Finally, always on the Desert Stage (which I has become immediately fond of!), is the turn of Radio Moscow. All the energy of an infinite jam session, made of the sounds of the 60s/70s, animated by blues and hard rock on the one hand, and psychedelic - with prog hints - on the other. And with a warm powerful voice, rich in personality. Californian origins of this power trio shows themselves clearly, and there is also a wink at the sounds of the desert, in what is ultimately a concert with no pauses of reflection, which runs at breakneck speed through chases of riffs and improvisations on the edge of solos. A great final for this first day!

House of Broken Promises + Monolith - 03.10.2017 - Ganz Of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

House of Broken Promises + Monolith - 03.10.2017 - Ganz Of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

House of Broken Promises + Monolith - 10.03.2017 - Ganz Of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Midweek concerts are always hard to reach for me living far from the centers of live music. Fortunately there are small venues that go against the prevailing trend, and they enlighten my week, giving me the illusion of being in Milan, Bologna or Rome.

Monolith, from Modena, open this Tuesday evening at Ganz Of Bicchio. The powerful voice of the singer is the first thing that strikes and captures the listener. And it is definitely a distinctive element as well as a strong point of the band. Grown up with Soundgarden and Chris Cornell, Andrea Marzoli with his voice and vocal lines emphasizes all the grunge attitude of a band that moves not only from these roots, but also through stoner rock and 90s hard rock. Powerful sounds and effective riffs for a great start of the evening.

And then House of Broken Promises and we are faced with three monsters of the stage. Massive, unbridled, hard and pure, they  skillfully blend the dusty sweaty stoner of the 90s, with the bravado of certain bikers-hard-rock in pure 80s style. Born from the ashes of Unida (Mike Cancino on drums and Arthur Seay on guitar), this power trio vibrates with all the amazing energy of the sounds born in the desert heart of California, making even more burning thanks to the roar of a motorcycle launched at full speed to the next beer and the next stripper. The three do not spare either a riff or a drop of sweat. They have fun like crazy (incredible Arthur Seay's constant grimace, as well as the fantastic sketch-duet guitar/drum - playing fragments of great rock classics - waiting for bassist Joe Mora return, gone who knows where!) and they let all the audience have fun. And all of while they play terribly well. Do you want something more?

Dead Cross - Dead Cross

Dead Cross - Dead Cross
(Ipecac Recordings, Three One G, 2017)

Dead Cross - Dead Cross
(Ipecac Recordings, Three One G, 2017)

Almost at the age of 50, Mike Patton continues to show obvious symptoms of Peter Pan's syndrome, which can now be considered incurable. When his playmate (and Fantômas-mate) Dave Lombardo contacted him to join him in his new toy, Dead Cross, Mike hid his hardcore t-shirts among school books and ran away from home, with his backpack, on a skate. His friend Dave led him down a bad road, introducing him to two playmates heavily addicted to sound violence: Mike Crain and Justin Pearson (the latter also bassist of The Locust). Arrived in the rehearsal room Mike found an already launched toy, with songs already written, but he immediately enjoyed replacing the vocal lines composed by the former singer (Gabe Serbian). So Mike has fallen again into the old habit of ultra heaviness like at the time of his collaboration with Dillinger Escape Plan. The result of this gang is a crazy and ultra-violent album, in which Patton crooked and delirious melodies give a horror movie gloomy atmosphere to a typically splatter chainsaw massacre made of thrash metal angry outbursts and super-rotten hardcore riffs. The plumbee mist  of Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's Dead is the only moment to "have a breathe" in a record that runs a thousand per hour (extraordinary performance of Lombardo), like a teenage with the DRI t-shirt on a skate. If age does not allow Patton big tricks on the skateboard (as his recent skate accident shows), this does not affect his "artistic youth", which is worthy of a teen full with hormones. Mike is the perfect playmate for Dead Cross, who had fun composing crazy, fast-paced and exalting music.

1000 Mods - Repeated Exposure To...

1000 Mods - Repeated Exposure To...
(Ouga Booga And The Mighty Oug Recordings, 2016)

1000 Mods - Repeated Exposure To...
(Ouga Booga And The Mighty Oug Recordings, 2016)

Here is from Greece an updated new edition of the heavy music dictionary. At the definition of "Stoner rock" we read "heavy riffs round like the ass of an elephant, with the groove of a car race under the burning Sun of the Californian desert, sandy sounds and lungs saturated with marijuana smoke". This meticulous and fitting definition of the genre is put into music by a Peloponnesian quartet that proves to know the subject very well. 1000 Mods carefully studied the lessons of the masters (mostly what was left in the legacy of Kyuss) and so they compose an extraordinarily engaging yet explicitly genre-related record. The secret to creating great songs, though deeply circumscribed in a saturated style like stoner, lies in simplicity. "Overwhelming riffs, catchy melodies, powerful slowdowns alternating with exciting accelerations, fat distortions and mastodontic volumes." This is all you need for a stoner album, according to the definition of the heavy dictionary published in Greece. 1000 Mods understood it in full, putting it into practice with this album!

The Obsessed - Sacred

The Obsessed – Sacred
(Relapse Records, 2017)

The Obsessed – Sacred
(Relapse Records, 2017)

Beyond the Ocean, far from foggy moors and British Celtic cemeteries, as well as far from the wild landscapes of Northern Europe, doom metal has planted its roots in the slums of American metropolis thanks to characters like Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Icon of the most sulphurous heavy metal since the second half of the 70s, Wino is American to the marrow, to the point of instilling a specific star and strip personality to all of his projects. In 2017, with the help of some of his Spirit Caravan buddies, Wino resurrects (again, after some reunion shows a few years ago) one of his cult bands, the Obsessed, and records an album that could not be born in any other place other than in the New World. Sacred is "arrogant" hard rock - so full of itself, as full of fat distortions, excellent riffs and catchy refrains. Wino is the obscure and disturbing face of the classic American vintage rocker (as Lemmy was). A dirty veteran voice in which the soul of the motorcyclist and the expressive depth of the crooner coexist. And also his guitar contrasts adrenaline-filled exhibitionism and veiled obscurity. In Sacred Wino has no intention of renewing his own style or rejuvenating a genuinely canonized genre such as the classic doom. Indeed he wants to honour it (just think that Sodden Jackal, amazing opening song, is the remake of the first song of the debut EP), anchoring it even more to its 70s roots (the cover of It's Only Money by Thin Lizzy makes explicit what is clear throughout the album). Sacred is a sincere homage to the smell of alcohol and foggy smog saturating US suburbs - constant source of inspiration for Wino even more than the lonely landscapes and cemeteries.
