Duel - Fears of the Dead

Duel – Fears of the Dead
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2016)

“Super heavy tripped out old school stoner metal from Austin, TX”.

Duel – Fears of the Dead
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2016)

“Super heavy tripped out old school stoner metal from Austin, TX”. Declaration of intent - and content - standing out both on the cover and on the cd of Duel debut album and which is an ultra-synthetic (and incisive) review of this full-lenght. Heyday horror movie graphics for the iconic cover (half pure blood red, half black&white hooded skull hiding two grinning human eyes) and creepy b-movies atmospheres (being in the States - more precisely in Texas! - it comes to my mind the amazing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre by Tobe Hooper). Fears of the Dead 8 tracks feed on 70s proto-metal and proto-doom sounds, but they also have a huge blues and stoner part - "fattening" the sound and making rhythmics even groovier and more enthralling - veined with psychedelia - especially in the final Locked Outside. Bass and drums - essential and "deadly" - make a great work in creating the compact dynamic rhythmic carpet on which the two guitars interweave 70s tasted riffs and solos (see Thin Lizzy and Blue Öyster Cult). If from the instrumental point of view we are in front of a perfect formula, fulfillment and exaltation of this all is Tom Frank bluesman voice: powerful and scratchy (even more charming in live shows!) it is definitely a distinctive note of the Texan band. Trite revival for nostalgics? Not at all: Duel sound is personal and full of lifeblood. Buy a pack of beers, turn up the volume and enjoy the party!
